Bridgelea Primary School is a safe haven for children, and we take our responsibilities for safeguarding them very seriously.
Through our curriculum, we teach children about personal safety and how to protect themselves from harm, incorporating the essential promotion of British values.
A robust anti-bullying ethos permeates our school. We equip our students with the skills to recognise bullying, understand how to protect themselves from bullying behaviour, and know how to report it. We actively listen to our children.
- Our curriculum creates opportunities for discussing feelings and emotions, guiding our students to reflect on their own personal safety and their rights as individuals to be safeguarded from harm.
- We educate our children about the responsible use of substances, including legal highs, at a developmentally appropriate time and level.
- Our clear guidelines for safe internet usage (including social media) are in place, bolstered by appropriate filters to keep pupils from accessing inappropriate materials.
- We adhere to stringent policies for child protection, health and safety, behaviour management, attendance, and the care of looked-after children, all in compliance with safeguarding recommendations for schools. Our dedicated safeguarding lead and designated governor have specific responsibility for ensuring these standards are upheld.
- We maintain policies for managing potential allegations against staff, whistleblowing, and physical intervention. A comprehensive list of the policies that support this statement is provided below.
- Our recruitment policies and practices are thorough and comply with safe recruitment and selection requirements. We diligently conduct identity checks and verify qualifications, and we carefully scrutinise written references before confirming any employment.
- All staff must obtain clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before they commence employment, including List 99 checks.
- All voluntary helpers, supply teachers, agency staff, and external club and coaching personnel are required to present evidence of DBS clearance.
- The local governing body receives regular updates regarding child protection, bullying, and safeguarding policies and practices.
- Every adult in our school carries the responsibility to maintain a high level of awareness about potential unsafe practices and to address any issues immediately and appropriately.

At Bridgelea Primary School, we play a vital role in ensuring pupils' safety and wellbeing and in the detection and prevention of child abuse. When a child joins our school, we are keen to establish a positive partnership between parents/carers and staff for the benefit of the child. Children will encounter many new learning experiences both in school and at home, helping them to reach their potential.
If a member of staff feels that a child may have suffered a non-accidental injury or abuse, we are obliged to report the matter to the Children’s Services Department immediately. This action is not at our discretion. Consequently, in such cases, it is likely that the parents/carers will be contacted by a social worker rather than by Bridgelea Primary School. Please visit our policies page for a full list of school policies.
If you are experiencing any difficulty, whether financial or emotional, please do not hesitate to call the school and ask for Lisa Shaw or Amy Robinson. Your call will be treated in confidence.
Women's Aid: If you are concerned about your safety, you can contact the school and ask for Lisa Shaw or Amy Robinson. Your call will be kept confidential. Women's Aid
