WILLOW 2023 - 2024

Mrs Pickering

Willow Class

Hello and welcome to our class page for Willow. In Willow Class, the teacher is Claire Pickering and the teaching assistants are Zaynah, Aaron and Saskia.

Special Breakfast happens each Friday where we have lots of tasty food, such as, pancakes, scrambled eggs, toast, beans and lots of fresh fruit which the children love. We give our certificates to our Rights Respecting Superstars, Amazing Readers and Amazing Mathematicians and we also find out which Duty Bearers have earned an extra special mention too.

Please try and read with your child by sharing one of the interactive texts on MyOn or by using their reading book if you have requested one to be sent home. If you are unsure of your child's login details for MyOn then please contact a member of the class team who will happily assist.

Your child has access to a range of online learning apps to aid them in their skills and knowledge. Encourage them to log in regularly and see if they can beat their previous scores. Again, if you are unsure of any login details then please do contact us and we will share these with you.

To view any of the wonderful work that we have undertaken in Willow Class, please refer to our Class Dojo Class Story and your child's Portfolio where you will find news, pictures, announcements, celebrations and general information. This is regularly updated. You can also look on our schools twitter page.

During the Autumn term we will be studying:

ENGLISH: Each half term we will focus on a variety of texts to bring both reading and writing to life for the class. We want to fully immerse and engage the children so then they want to learn.  We will also have a class read which will be separate to our English text, we will read this each day to enable the class to hear stories and poems read to them. This will to allow them to listen with enjoyment.

Our English work this half term will be based around three texts:

  • You are a Champion - Marcus Rashford
  • Be the change: poems to help the change world - Liz Brownlee, Roger Stevens and Matt Goodfellow
  • So you think you’ve got it bad: A kids life in Ancient Egypt - Chae Strathie

Our reading will focus on reading for meaning so then the children will be able to answer questions based around the texts that we are reading. In all of our written work, we will be using Colourful Semantics to help us improve our sentence structure.

MATHS: We will also be covering number and place value and in using the four operations. We will be using a range of maths apparatus in practical sessions to enable us to understand numbers and the number system. So many elements on the teaching of maths rely on multiplication tables, please ensure that your child is learning these at home and reinforcing their knowledge regularly.

SCIENCE: Our main focus this half term is looking at Life Cycles. We will focus on metamorphosis of animals, understand the life cycles of a range of living things and find out about pollination and seed dispersal.

ART: We will be working with Jo our school artist and working on our drawing, sketching and shading skills.

COMPUTING: This term, we will continue to develop our skills in coding.

RSE: The theme for this half term is Living in the Wider World. Later in the term, we will be finding out about: the wider importance of personal hygiene, puberty and relationships.

RE: Our focus will be on: Why do some people believe that God Exists? We will be thinking about the beliefs of others and comparing these to our own.

After October half term, Willow Class will be swimming each week - your child will need a swimming kit and a towel.
