As many of you will be aware, there was a tragic incident over the weekend.  Sadly a 17 year old boy died at Wythenshawe hospital following a stabbing and two young people have now been charged.

The Council and the Police would like to work together with schools to encourage a sense of calm and to minimise the amount of speculation in the student population about this incident.

I have been asked by the Gold Commander for this tragic incident to share the following message with schools and request that headteachers ensure that this message is delivered to their pupils as a matter of urgency.

As you aware, two teenage boys have been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Yousef Makki that happened on the evening of Saturday 2 March in Hale Barnes.

This means that the investigation is now in the court process and you must refrain from speculating to allow a fair court process to take place.

By this, we mean that no information is published on social media or any public platform as this has potential to influence the legal proceedings.  Publishing information that prejudices a court case is punishable under the Contempt of Court Act so we cannot stress enough the importance of this.

It must also be stressed that under the Children and Young Persons’ Act, the people charged will not and must not be identified by name.

While the case is at court, there will be reporting in the media but this will be purely factual and only on what is said in open court.

We cannot forget that Yousef’s family and friends are understandably devastated by what has happened and we owe it to them to allow them to grieve privately and have their privacy respected.
